Loiacono Literary Agency welcomes Philip Levin and his novel Shattered Lives!

Shattered Lives tells of an American family devastated by the accidental death of the seventeen-year-old daughter.  The father, Rick, and son, Andrew, migrate from Chicago to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to escape the ghosts, where Rick falls in love with Andrew’s teacher. The sixteen-year-old Andrew must deal with the loss of his sister, a dramatic change in his culture, as well as a psychiatric issue.  When the mother, Mallory, comes down to try to remake the family, she reveals a dark secret about Rick that throws Andrew into a crisis.  Rick must decide whether to give up his new love and life for Andrew’s sake or risk the loss of son and livelihood.

Philip Levin’s passion for writing and photography has led him to exotic locations around the globe, inspiring his production of seventeen published books in multiple genres, such as his murder mystery Inheritance, photo children books such as the African Ndovu the Elephant, and his non-fiction anthologies on Mississippi history.  His background includes thirty-seven years as an emergency medicine physician. Shattered Lives is his second novel. President Gulf Coast Writer’s Association www.gcwriters.org

Incredible review of Johnnie Come Lately by Kathleen M. Rodgers (Note the pose of the last sentence! Beautiful!)

Incredible review of Johnnie Come Lately by Kathleen M. Rodgers (Note the prose of the last sentence! Beautiful!)

By Ellen Thornton on December 27, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I just finished reading Johnnie Come Lately and immediately returned to page one so I could have the pleasure of reading again this bighearted story about the Kitchen family of Portion, Texas. Quite simply I do not want the story to end. And I’m glad to learn author Kathleen M. Rodgers is writing a sequel. I love the characters in Rodger’s novel, the generous voice of the story, its language, insights and humor, the wise descriptions of emotion, the plotting, the perfect-pitch tension, pacing, and drama in even the smallest scenes. It was so easy to identify with the Kitchen family and the sorrows, failures and challenges in their lives, but most especially it’s easy to fall in love with Rodger’s engaging protagonist, Johnnie Kitchen. Johnnie has come a long way since the days early in her life when her emotionally unstable mother disappeared and the terrifying eating disorder bulimia nearly killed the vulnerable young girl. We meet her after she’s married and become the mother of three young people in various stages of taking wrong turns and finding themselves. But the focus is Johnnie and her quest to make sense of old family secrets and tragedies, her desire to win her husband’s forgiveness and her longing to find her mother and learn the identity of her father. Throughout, she’s stalked by the terrifying demon of self-destruction. This novel is a little like a spring day in Texas beneath storm clouds and slanting rays of sunshine, where, alongside a gritty highway, millions of exquisite wildflowers bloom.

Fantastic review for Stephen Doster's novel Jesus Tree

Fantastic review for Stephen Doster's novel Jesus Tree

I received Jesus Tree from Goodreads Giveaways. What follows is my honest opinion of this book.

If you just read one book in 2015, let it be Jesus Tree. I had not read any of Mr. Doster's prior books but felt I would like Jesus Tree, as the setting for this story is my home state, Georgia. I have great appreciation for the incredible amount of research that Mr. Doster did prior to writing this book, delving into the murder of the white pastor in southeast Georgia during the depression and the subsequent 40 year prison sentence served by the black man who was wrongly convicted of the crime, which true event served as a basis for this story.

Beyond that though, the author spent a great deal of time in explaining the African culture of coastal Georgia, the belief system that dominated the lives of the blacks living in areas such as Sapelo Island; the culture that made Ben Jordan into the honest, god-fearing man he remained throughout his entire life.

This story was extremely well crafted and knitted together as Ben's story is told from birth to death; the predictions made at the time of his birth and how they all played out in the following 60 years or so. The descriptions of the root doctor and his conjures to the torture Ben endured in the prison camp seemed so real I felt I could have been there. The incredible emotion as Ben finally completes his journey back to Sapelo Island and his redemption were the ultimate great ending to the story that I was expecting.

I won't say more and spoil this book for anyone else. I can't say enough good things about this book and I trust anyone else who spends the time with Jesus Tree will feel the same.

Deep review of Touching Spirit: Letters of Minominike by James “Pep” Washburn…

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike . . . . . . . . . . . . "Pep, I just finished reading Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike a few moments ago. I am simultaneously settled and stirred. Settled in the oneness of Creator and Creation, and stirred to deeper awareness of the Teacher within. This book deserves to be read more than once, and I intend to do just that."

Great review for Playing Mrs. Kingston by Tony Lee Moral

Great review for Playing Mrs. Kingston by Tony Lee Moral

www.tonyleemoral.com
Playing Mrs. Kingston is a suspense thriller filled with intrigue and sizzling tension. Set in the 1950's, this impressive novel contains everything needed to be quite the page turner.
Romance, secrets, betrayal, blackmail and murder are the many components that detail this fascinating story.
Catriona Benedict is a struggling actress. On the closing night of her cancelled show she meets the wealthy and flamboyant Miles Kingston. He offers her the best role of her life; all she has to do is pretend to be his wife for a few weeks. She will make more money than she ever has for this charade, plus she gets to keep all the clothes and gifts he will shower her with while playing the part of Mrs. Kingston.
What is that old saying..."when something sounds too good to be true it probably is" such is the case for Catriona.
The plot was solid and the unexpected twists and turns throughout the book will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Enjoyable read!

Limitless Publishing has acquired Ken La Salle’s novel, Heaven Enough!

Heaven Enough (release 2015)

“Heaven Enough” is a poem about longing, about wishing for something more. “What would it be like if I had heaven enough?” it reads.
Matt Murphy reads these words for the first time at his wife’s funeral when he is presented with a book of sonnets by an attendee. He and Diva were married for nearly twenty years, yet he did not “know” her. A poet and lover of culinary delights, among many other things, she is struck by a car and killed instantly on the wrong side of town. What was she doing there? A poet laureate? What else?
When her brother, “the monk,” comes for the funeral, Matt is set on a course unprecedented. Diva’s computer is covered in hiking information set for that coming Friday— to hike the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) of 2668 miles from the Mexican border to Canada. He takes this upon himself to do, and also to sprinkle Diva’s ashes along the way. What happens in the first two hours is dumbfounding; what happens next changes his life forever.

Inspired at a young age by Robert Pirsig’s Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, La Salle studied philosophy at California State University, Fullerton. This slight dichotomy from work as a stage actor and singer quickly infected all of his writing until he left all other passions behind for writing alone.  www.kenlasalle.com

For the teen who has everything, yet still believes in The Knights of the Round table… Veiled Virtues

For the teen who has everything, yet still believes in The Knights of the Round table…
Veiled Virtues

Veiled Virtues transpires in England and has both history and fantasy aspects. It would appeal to teens all the way through adult just as Harry Potter and Inkheart. Told from the two main characters' different perspectives, the work is a bit of a supernatural mystery and a romantic fantasy all rolled into one.
Paige didn't know that modern day English knights do exist and that she would need their protection. But all of this changed in an internet café in Newbury, England when she saw the blood on her laptop…
Paige had just taken on a summer house-sitting gig in England for a friend of her mother's when strange occurrences such as hearing voices, the house turning into a freezer, and random bleeding wounds, outward markings of stigmata, appear on Paige. She is acutely aware that things are happening more now that she is in Newbury – she sees bits of the future and is strangely affected by certain people and objects. Her supernatural potential has made her a target for an evil faction in England, the Cerberus Brotherhood, who want her for their own devices.
She meets Nathaniel who is an eclectic shop keeper known for little but is speculated more about in this country township. He and his family, as members of the Rosetta Guard, are all too familiar with the sinister capabilities of the "Cerbs." As Nathaniel confides his family's secrets in Paige, their love grows, as does the commitment of the Guard to Paige's cause.

Juniper Ellis’ novel House of Seven Days has been acquired by Limitless Publishing!

Juniper Ellis’ novel House of Seven Days has been acquired by Limitless Publishing!

House of Seven Days is a unique story of a ‘scavenger hunt’ …of sorts. Pond’s aunt has left her a sprawling Victorian manor that ceaselessly discloses hidden this, that or the-others. She has been bombarded with codicil after codicil from her aunt’s will; strange sentences which turn out to be hints to uncovering the truth….but of what? A teenage ‘squatter’ who was left behind by her mother who cleaned for Pond’s aunt, a ‘chimney’ sweep? and a dapper gentleman with a dog, who claims to have a room there, are only half the entourage who complete the ensemble. Each has something to contribute, yet none are initially welcome.
Not a traditional chapter book, it is by the day of the week as Pond has been given seven days to figure out the riddles and hope to retain the extraordinary property and all of the inheritance.
Juniper Ellis is an award-winning professor and a speaker-in-demand from Paris to Pennsylvania, reaching people from all walks of life. Audiences say her words are “challenging and inspiring, life-changing, smart and relatable, radiant, uplifting and funny, eloquent.”  Her nonfiction book Tattooing the World (Columbia University Press, 2008) was listed as “required reading” in the New York Post and won the 2008 City Paper award for best book by a Baltimore author. www.juniperellis.com

So Where Do You Start? by Jeanne Charters author of Shanty Gold

by Jeanne Charters author of Shanty Gold, published by Rogue Phoenix Press (release 2015)

This is a picture of a sculpture at Cobh Harbor (Cork Harbor)
So, where do you start?
That’s the question that plagues anyone who attempts to write a novel. Where to start?
In my first iteration of Shanty Gold, I started with Mary Boland sitting on a hillside looking out at the Irish Sea and grieving the fact that she would have to leave it.
It was quite lyrical and poetic (I thought). So did my husband. He still prefers that version.
But one thing I learned in a good writing class was: Begin your novel at the moment of change. Great change.
So, in the final version, you’ll find Mary enroute to the Cork Harbor on foot, falling to the earth until she’s scooped up by a fellow famine family into their wagon.

At a small air base in Louisiana, family man and seasoned fighter pilot, Tuck Westerfield's life could literally crash down around him. In this business of flying fighter jets, the odds of staying alive are stacked against him.
Haunted by the memories of dead friends killed in air mishaps, this Vietnam vet and father of three must deal with a devious commander, an animal-crazed neighbor whose husband hates pilots, a beautiful, but suspicious wife and a rebellious teenage daughter. The last thing he needs is another war.
But when Iraq invades Kuwait in the middle of a muggy Louisiana summer, duty calls. Tuck and the other pilots in his squadron head to the Middle East.
Back in Louisiana, Gina Westerfield and other military wives learn that war is hell on the home front, too.
When tragedy strikes, everyone at Beauregard Air Force Base must pull together and live on or forever be consumed with grief.

Although fiction, this story has just as much to do with fact. Kathleen’s husband, Tom Rodgers, flew fighter jets for the United States Air Force for twenty years and then for American Airlines for twenty-two years until his recent retirement. Their real life experiences, both personal and professional, shine through in this military tale. This book, before and now, is dedicated to her husband/best friend…and those who have flown west.
